Description

The University of Nebraska Medical Center aims to hire 4 faculty members with expertise in Clinical Research Informatics, Machine Learning and AI. These faculty members will join a rich academic environment with strong links to the healthcare system poised to catalyze clinical and translational research. We anticipate hiring all 4 positions in 2022-2023. Departments involved in the cluster hire include: Neurological Sciences, Internal Medicine, Pathology and Microbiology, Surgery, Neurosurgery, Radiology, and Pediatrics/Children’s Hospital and Medical Center.
The Cluster Hire aims to develop specific infrastructure and increased collaboration across UNMC and with other partners including funding agencies, the healthcare sector, industry and the State of NE. Individual faculty would be hired into one of the involved departments.
These new faculty and UNMC will promote new levels and forms of collaboration and funding mechanisms, including an infrastructure that encourages scientists from different silos to work together in high impact information science areas and establishes new research programs, offices, and shared space––an “idea factory” for all. Collaborators could be connected to mechanisms for support of fellowships, conferences, workshops, and other venues (e.g., summer institutes, retreats, focus groups) to encourage UNMC clinician scientists to broaden their knowledge and technical capability. We will work together toward a sustainable institutional framework for oversight, assistance, and management services to the critical mass of new hires.
Successful candidates will be investigators (MD, PhD, PharmD, DDS or equivalent) with research focused on health informatics approaches and the use of electronic health record (EHR) data to address high impact clinical or clinical-translational research questions. They will have expertise that includes ML and AI approaches, clinical research informatics, clinical decision support, population health informatics, and/or the intersection of informatics and health services research.
Candidates will be expected to maintain strong, externally-funded research programs in biomedical informatics as part of a diverse, interdisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians at UNMC and with the Great Plains IDeA Clinical and Translational Research (GP IDeA-CTR) network. Candidates will also be expected to assist, evaluate, advise and mentor junior faculty scholars, as well as graduate and medical students regarding research and curricular matters and to perform administrative duties as assigned.
Applicants with expertise/strong interest in technology-enabled approaches to enhancing healthcare delivery and disease prevention in underserved vulnerable populations (e.g. rural, under-insured, minority) are encouraged to apply.
Preferred prior experience:
· Methodologic expertise in areas such as machine learning, translational bioinformatics (e.g., integrating EHR/omics data), causal inference approaches, and precision medicine approaches
· A track record of independent extramural funding
· Experience in an academic medical center setting with a working understanding of the clinical, educational, and research missions
· Subspecialty board certification in Clinical Informatics or AMIA Health Informatics Certification is preferred.
· Experience working with clinical research data
· Expertise in the use, and linking, of various sources of health data including the electronic medical record, administrative/claims data, and/or publicly available datasets
· Practical experience in the design, development, adoption, and application of health IT in a variety of clinical and research environments.
· Track record of accomplishments in clinical informatics, with corresponding accomplishments in scholarship and peer-reviewed recognition.
· Experience and expertise in regulatory aspects of clinical research informatics
· Demonstrated skills in strategic planning, system implementation, and clinical research operations.
· Strong record of leadership, project management, and collaboration including the ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, residents/fellows, and students.
· Demonstrated commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion and serving a diverse population.
· Demonstrated analytical skills including use of statistics, with strong problem solving, writing, and oral communication skills.
Applicants must complete a Faculty application https://unmc.peopleadmin.com/postings/67756 in order to be considered.

Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
